In the weeks after sharing the happy news with my parents, I did my best to avoid all things wedding. I would’ve married Cooper tomorrow if he’d have let me. I just couldn’t wrap my head around the idea of traveling to London. As in England. As in the other side of the ocean. And the inescapable fact that I’d have to get on an airplane to get there.

We’d decided on a June wedding, and I’d yet to tell Cooper about my insurmountable fear of flying, an eensie-weensie detail that left me less than three months to either discover the secrets of teleportation or overcome a lifelong phobia.

At least I had realistic expectations.

“I haven’t looked through a Brides magazine in over twenty years.” Silvia let out a girlish sigh as she perused the thick spring issue.

The glossy pages called out to the teenage girl in me, and I snatched the magazine from Silvia’s hands, hugging it to my chest.

“Hey!”

I hopped onto her desk and flipped to the first page. “My wedding. My book.” I tried to act mature about the whole thing. I really did, but even the smell of the crisp new magazine gave me a strange kind of high.

Silvia planted her hands on her hips and narrowed her eyes at me. “You aren’t about to go all Bridezilla on us, are you?”

“No.” I laughed as I thumbed through the pages, stealthily huffing the inky scent. “No Bridezillas here.”

“Wait! What about that one?” Vicky stood over my shoulder, shoving her finger between two pages as she pointed to a frothy confection of a gown.

“Eww. No. I can feel the type-two diabetes coming on just looking at the picture.” I resumed my flipping until I landed on something simpler. The milky-white sheath hugged the model’s curves just enough to be sexy without being scandalous. “Now this is me: simple yet classy.”

“Are you kidding?” Silvia popped her head into the conversation. “I suppose it’s a pretty dress, but you’re never gonna walk down the aisle in that.”

“Why?” I had no idea if she was insulting me or daring me.

“First of all, it’s too clingy for underwear.” Silvia eyed me over her reading glasses. There was no mistaking the challenge in her stare.

Vicky mouthed, “Panty lines.”

“Looks to me like she’s wearing a thong.” June leaned over the page, pointing to a barely visible flaw in the image.

Silvia slid her glasses to the end of her nose and clucked her tongue. “Nope. That’s a crease in the page.”

I squinted to get a better look.

“Oh, yep, look at that. A wrinkle in the paper.” June nodded, and I had to agree.

“And here…” Silvia ran her finger over the bodice. “You can almost see her nipples through the crepe.”

“Okay, fine.” I closed the magazine and tossed it onto the desk. “No see-through nighty-dresses, but I’m not wearing one of those whipped cream parfait jobs either.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll find something.” Silvia patted my shoulder.

Phil poked his head into the office. “I don’t suppose I could get you ladies to do a little work today.
